The What
The Sith Jet Trooper activation at the Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker world premiere in Hollywood seamlessly merged the virtual and physical worlds by inviting the user into a full scale physical Star Destroyer corridor while two virtual Sith Jet Troopers rendered on an LED wall (airlock door) humorously interrogated them.
These virtual characters were powered by real time motion capture performances streamed over Verizon 5G from a stage 15 miles away in Playa Vista allowing the user to have a live conversation with actors. With ILMxLAB and Lucasfilm overseeing the brand elements, the Sith Trooper performers were true to the Star Wars universe as they commented on partygoers’ attire, event badges, and other unique interactions.
At the end of the experience, users received an augmented reality version of their conversation that made the Sith Troopers appear to step out of the airlock door and come right up to the user.
